I just didn't realize what great sand beaches existed along Lake Superior, the largest body of fresh water in the world. We had planned on moving on but after morning coffee on the beach and decided to spend one more night.
We've spent the last few days camped by a beautiful lake in the Hiawatha National forest near AuTrain, Michigan. It is so much like the Adirondacks but On a much larger scale. This lovely park extends from the village of Munising 40 miles along Lake Superior to the village of Grand Marais. Lots of hiking, kayaking and camping opportunities here. I know I sound like a broken record, but we are set up for the road. Here are some of our camps so far. We've made it to the Upper Peninsala of Michigan. We checked into a lovely state campground on the Green Bay. Friendly people and the best camp showers we've ever used. They will be the last we see for awhile. Again great biking was close at hand. Where are we? A. Cape Hatteras, North Carolina B. Palm Coast, Florida C. AuTrain, Michigan After a few days and some good local fresh caught perch fries while avoiding the mushy fish bowl and deep fried cheese curds life is good. The state campgrounds are huge. The ones we stayed in had 650 and 850 sites, and had extensive bike trail systems. The area is very bike and motorcycle friendly. On our last Saturday in Door County we attended the Steel Bridge Festival which feature a blues band out of Green Bay that had Jim Schwal sitting in on the gig. Anyone remember that name? It was a great show, I even won a Harley tee shirt. We visted a number of lovely coastline parks. This place caters to boaters and fisherpeople. Door County kind of grew on me. It was a lot like NewYork State-The Adirondacks without the mountains; Western NY with more trees. |
